CO2 Laser Treatment Aftercare: Your Skin Day-by-Day
Wondering what co2 laser treatment aftercare really looks like before you decide to give laser a try?
We completely understand. Knowing what to expect before and after your treatment can make the whole experience feel so much more comfortable.
Here, we're sharing the aftercare tips our founder and lead provider, Ashley, a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with 17 years of experience in healthcare and a true passion for aesthetics, shares with our clients.
These are the same recommendations she gives to her clients before and after treatment, and they've helped many of our clients achieve results they truly love.
So, let's dive into all things CO2 fractional laser aftercare and what your skin needs from you along the way.
CO2 Laser Treatment Aftercare: What To Expect
Right after your CO2 laser treatment, your skin will probably look and feel a little different than usual. You may notice redness, warmth, swelling, tightness, or increased sensitivity. This is all part of your skin's natural healing process.
Depending on how intense your treatment is, your recovery can look different. Fractional CO2 laser treatments generally have a different recovery than more aggressive resurfacing treatments, and your provider may adjust the settings based on your skin and goals.
The most important thing is to be gentle with your skin while it heals. And while we're sharing general guidance here, always follow the specific aftercare instructions your provider gives you.
They know exactly how your treatment was performed and what your skin needs to recover beautifully.
CO2 Laser Recovery: Your Skin Day-by-Day
Days 1–3: Redness, Swelling & Sensitivity
The first few days are when your skin needs the most care. Right after treatment, you may notice redness, warmth, swelling, tightness, and sensitivity. Your skin can feel similar to a sunburn.
We see this with our clients often, and while it can look a little dramatic at first, it's a normal part of the healing process. Keep your skincare gentle and follow the aftercare routine Ashley or your provider recommends for your treatment.
If you notice severe pain, worsening symptoms, or anything that doesn't feel right, contact your provider.
Days 4–7: Peeling & New Skin
This is when you may start seeing more dryness, flaking, and peeling. It can be tempting to help the process along, but don't pick, peel, or exfoliate your skin. Let it shed naturally.
With fractional CO2, you may notice small areas of peeling or tiny crusted spots as your skin heals. Your recovery will depend on your treatment settings and your individual skin.
As the old skin sheds, you'll gradually start seeing fresher, smoother-looking skin underneath.
Week 2 & Beyond: The Healing Continues
By the second week, your skin will usually start looking and feeling more like itself. Some redness or sensitivity can still linger, but it should gradually settle.
And remember, your results don't stop when the peeling does. Your skin continues to heal and produce new collagen, so improvements in texture, tone, and overall skin quality can continue for weeks and even months.
As your skin recovers, Ashley will let you know when it's time to return to your usual skincare routine and reintroduce active ingredients.
Be gentle, be patient, and let your skin do its thing. That's something we remind our clients throughout the entire recovery process.
What Can't You Do After a CO2 Laser?
After CO2 laser treatment, your skin needs some time to heal, so this is definitely not the time to push it. Avoid direct sun exposure, intense exercise, excessive heat, and anything that causes a lot of sweating while your skin is recovering.
Your skin will be more sensitive than usual, so keeping things calm and protected is key.
You'll also want to avoid picking, peeling, or exfoliating your skin, even if you notice flaking or dryness.
Let your skin shed naturally and avoid harsh products like scrubs, acids, and retinoids until your provider says it's okay to use them again.
And when it comes to makeup, give your skin a little time before covering it up. When you can start wearing makeup again will depend on your treatment and how your skin is healing.
When in doubt, gentle is always better.
Washing & Sleeping After CO2 Laser
One of the first things clients usually ask us is, “How many hours can I wash my face after a CO2 laser?” This depends on the treatment and the aftercare protocol your provider uses.
Once you're cleared to wash your face, keep it very gentle. Use lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, avoid rubbing or scrubbing, and gently pat your skin dry.
Sleeping can take a little more thought, too. For the first few nights, sleeping with your head slightly elevated can help with swelling. Try to avoid putting pressure or friction on the treated skin, especially while it's still sensitive.
When Should You Contact Your Provider?
Most CO2 laser recovery symptoms are temporary and should gradually improve as your skin heals. But if your pain, redness, swelling, or warmth is getting worse instead of better, it's worth checking in with your provider.
You should also reach out if you notice signs of infection, unusual drainage, fever, or anything else that feels concerning or different from what you were told to expect.
And please don't ever feel like you're bothering someone by asking questions. When it comes to your skin, it's always better to ask if you're unsure.
At Luxe, Ashley is always there for her clients and is happy to help you through the healing process. If something doesn't feel right or you simply need some reassurance, reach out. That's what we're here for.
Final Thoughts On CO2 Fractional Laser Aftercare
The most important part of CO2 laser treatment aftercare is giving your skin time to heal. Keep your skincare gentle, protect your skin from the sun, and avoid picking, peeling, exfoliating, or using harsh products while your skin recovers.
Don't worry if your skin doesn't look perfect right away. Redness, peeling, and sensitivity can take some time to settle, and your results will continue to develop as your skin heals and produces new collagen.
If you're thinking about CO2 laser and want to know what recovery could look like for you, book a consultation with Ashley. She'll answer your questions and help you feel confident about what to expect.
